Naas Town Council passes Budget

NAAS 08 January 2003: Naas Town Council last night unanimously adopted its Draft Budget for 2003, with an increase of 5 per cent in the commercial rates. The Budget represents a total gross expenditure of E6.6 million including the County Charge of E1.3 million, and represents an increase of just over 11 per cent on 2002.

'A Broken Surface'

An exhibition of work by Victor Sloan will be opened at the Riverbank Arts Centre in Newbridge on Sunday 9th February at 3.00 pm and will continue until Friday 28th February.

Dungannon-born Sloan's exhibition consists of a selection of work produced over a 20-year period.

Although much of the basis of Sloan’s work is on life in the North of Ireland this exhibition will also include work from his 1994 visit to Borne Sulinowo in Poland, which includes unusual objects and memorabilia left behind when the Soviet Army, vacated the town overnight in 1992 .


Pay parking mooted for Kilcullen

Kildare County Council is considering implementing a pay parking system for Kilcullen as the parking situation in the town is now 'problematic'

The council is currently negotiating with Leinster Marts to provide a car park on its land for use in the town, and a council engineer said putting pay parking throughout the town is a 'priority'.


Kildare 'Rose' selected

The 'Rose of Kildare' is Kill veterinary nurse Janet Hannan. She now goes forward to the Dublin heat of the RoKse of Tralee compeition to try and be selected for the Kerry festival.


Tidy Towns plan

The plan is believed to concentrate particularly on the development of the town centre area.

Court action was over arrears

The 85 per cent immediate payment of parking fines which Naas Town Council enjoyed wouldn't happen if Naas Town Council wasn't prepared to go to court over unpaid fines, town clerk Declan Kirrane has told councillors.

He was responding to a query over an E46,700 legal bill for the collection of unpaid fines which had been pai by the council in 2002. In last year's estimates, the provision for such fees had been just under E12,700.

"Was the money recovered as much as it cost to recover?" Cllr Seamie Moore asked.

He didn't get a direct answer. The town clerk merely said that the larger-than-expected figure related to 'several years of arrears'.


New foootpaths in Kilcullen

Kildare County Council is to built a new footpath outside Kilcullen's Library, thanks to discretionary monies allocated by Cllrs Tony Lawlor and Timmy Conway.

The work will commence after the completion of a new cobblelock footpatch on the main street outside the Cross and Passion College, using E3,000 of materials supplied by Kilcullen Community Action and CPC.

Does your chewing gum lose its flavour?

The chewing gum problem afflicting the sidewalks of Naas may be addressed prior to the arrival of the New Zealand contingent for the Special Olympics, councillors heard recently.

In a discussion on the problem, raised by Cllr Seamie Moore, town clerk Declan Kirrane said the council is looking into the cost of hiring a machine to take gum off the paths, because the town should look good during the visit by the Olympians.

"The Olympic torch will be passing through Naas on 20 June," he noted.
