Refuse charge increase upcoming

KILDARE GENERAL 10 January 2003: Kildare County Council's refuse charges may rise to E324 for 2003 if proposals in the Draft Budget for the county are accepted by councillors.

This would represent a 35 per cent increase on 2002, and a whopping 83 per cent increase over the 2001 figure.

The county finance officials are recommending a rates increase of almost 7.5 per cent to meet a shortfall between the county's income and an estimated E88.3 million spending programme for 2003.

Waste disposal costs for 2003 are an estimated E13 million. Waste is currently transferred from the almost full dump at Silliott Hill in Kilcullen to the Arthurstown Dump at Kill, via a baling station in Dublin.

The discussion of the budhet proposals begins next Monday.
