Litter at your financial peril

NAAS 15 January 2003: If you are in the habit of stubbing out a cigarette butt, or spitting out chewing gum, on the sidewalks of Naas, it could cost you big from here on in.

Naas Community Wardens have been ordered to issue fines for littering from this month, in a major extension of their work.

They are also being issued with photo-capable mobile phones and/or hand computers to help them gather evidence for their work.

Meantime, a 'Naas Clean-up Day' is to take place on St Brigid's Day, 1 February.

The concept had been agreed by Naas councillors late last year, but it was only at a recent meeting of the council that a firm date was set.

It is hoped that schools will encourage their students to take part.
