Warning about new litter bins

NAAS 27 January 2003: If the new litter bins recently installed by Naas Town Council 'are not respected', they will not be renewed, Naas town clerk Declan Kirrane has warned councillors.

"Some of the new bins weren't up 24 hours when some gougers were damaging them," he said at a recent meeting. "If they are not respected, we'll leave the litter around for somebody else to deal with."

And he wondered about the attitudes of 'female school students who sat on litter bins during their lunch hour'.

Cllr Charlie Byrne said the problem of vandalising litter bins highlighted the urgent need for the provision of the CCTV system and for more gardai on the streets.

A report to councillors noted that a review of the Litter Plan is to be undertaken, and a revised schedule for street sweeping has been prepared. And Community Wardens are now issuing 'on the spot' fines to people seen littering.
