P.R.O. Report

Well done Jenny, Bernie and I suppose John, the 70's night was wonderful, held in Tougher Saturday 8th October. The ballroom was transformed into a blast from the past.
I was greeted by "ABBA"alias Jenny with eyelashes so long - they defied gravity, our past DO was resplendent in a salmon pink and Dalmatian ensemble, topped with fuzzy wig and groovy sunglasses. Ouch! Even our present D.O.arrived looking like a demure little flower girl, fresh over from San Francisco. There was a rich mixture of frilly shirts, flares and wigs -that was the fellas. Cher made an appearance, but declined tosing.  Hiawatha fell off the trail and was held hostage by some crazed Rastafarian,(who let them in anyway) white boots - legs up to bums and minis(dresses) were prolific on the ladies, purple wigs and dancing the handbags in the middle of the girly group was quite authentic.  Elvis lost a lot of weight but lost his way sometime during the night to several glasses of booze, God help the cows the next day.
One or two of the lads got stuck in a time warp 1770? And as for his little fluffy pussy - adorable or wott?

We thank the Dalkey groupies who arrived in the spirit of the night, running off with a vast portion of our prizes, who paid who, and I think it was her white boots that won her the prize for best dressed female.

In all a good night was had by all, mind you it will be the last time for a while that some of the guys will know what it is to have a full head of hair.

The auction was gripping stuff, was it John or Bernie ,identical outfits made it hard to distinguish, anyway one of them pushed and cajoled the wayward crowd,(probably high onsomething at this stage) into paying maga bucks for treatments, cruises from Blacksod Bay, promised fun and dinner with more plonk thrown in,enough beef for a sizeable  heart attack, a clockwith a diver seducing a mermaid, the purchaser giving it to a child! A smashing picture, the Tate gallery has promised to mend threat, to name but a few items, well done.

Thank you DJ, music was brill, not enough slow smoochie no's for some of the "original 70's" flower children, they were recognizable by their original 70's gear.
The committee would like thank all and every person who attended and contributed to the night,  .......... was raised another night must surely follow sometime in the near future.

Congrats to our new diving officer,Rose, who would appreciate your co-operation and patience - until she gets into the swim of things.

Last but not least, we wish Maire and Barry all the best as they will be hitched by the time you all get this press release - we hope they will have many hours of................diving together!

Our New 7.3mt Gemini RIB with twin 90HP Tohatsu two stroke engines that was bought this year with the aid of a €25,000 grant from The National Lottery. We used it to good effect when we helped out the emergency services in the search for two English tourists that were tragically lost off Inish Turk on the June Bank Holiday weekend

Club Info

Naas2.jpg

The Club was established in 1974 & we now have approximately 50 members, which include 8 qualified instructors. We therefore have a good ratio of instructors to trainees. Each year we take on 10 - 12 trainees.Training starts in November & continues over the winter months. It consists of in water training in the Curragh pool & 4 x sets of lectures on dive theory which takes place on Sunday afternoons. We start snorkeling on the 1st January & weather permitting diving commences mid February to early March.

Our club is affiliated to CFT, (The Irish Underwater Council ) which in turn is a member of CMAS, (Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques) the world governing body. All the diving courses & tests are run either in club or on a regional basis. It is a very well structured system with the emphasis always on safety. Some of the courses we run are Trainee Diver, Club Diver, Diver Medic, Diver Cox’n, Rescue Diver, Leading Diver, Nitrox Diver, Nitrox Blender, Extended Range, Search & Recovery Diver, Mon* (Instructor), Mon **(Examiner) & Mon *** (Gods)
These are all worldwide recognised & well respected diving qualifications.
All the instructors give their time free so all the courses are all kept affordable with no time pressure. No balancing act between profit & safety.

Our members vary from those who just like to take the occasional dive to get wet to the techies who are not happy unless stuck in some wreck somewhere in 50mt+.
We dive every opportunity the weather gives us & our normal haunts are Hook Head, Wexford for shore diving, Slade Harbour and Kilmore Quay, Wexford for boat diving. In the summer when the evenings get a bit longer we dive out of the Coal Harbour, Dun Laoghaire on a Wednesday evening, meeting at 6.30pm. Then on Bank Holiday weekends we head further a field to places like Baltimore, Valentia Island, , Aran Islands, Mullaghmore, Kilkee, Malinbeg & Belmullet. We also go away for a week’s holiday in Ireland & this year it is to Inisbofin for third week in July (14th to 21st July). Organised groups also go foreign to such places as Gozo (Malta), Red Sea (Egypt), Lanzarote, El Hiero, Dahab (Egypt), Truk Lagoon, Cuba & Thailand.
Girlfriend, boyfriends, wives, husbands & family members are all welcome to come along to any club activities. It’s not a great spectator sport but if you give them the credit card they normally enjoy themselves also!  We normally all meet up at night for a meal, a few drinks & plenty of craic.

Club Fees.
The Fees for the year are €450 which include €100, affiliation & insurance fees to CFT. For this you get all your diving, all air fills, all pool training & all instruction. You don’t have to be a genius to see the value there if you are going to dive a little.
Besides the value there is also a good social element to club activities with great friendships being made.
Full fees are due on 1st December 2012. You will also be required to have a dive medical with your own GP & we have dive medical forms available to download from this site in pdf format or I have some hard copies on request (Dive medicals must be done on these forms only).

Club Equipment
We are well equipped with 3 x Boats (RIBS) = 2 x Northcraft 6.2mt RIBS with 130HP Honda four stroke engines,
Our latest edition which we bought for €46,000 with the help of a LOTTO grant of €25,000– a 7.3mt Gemini RIB with twin 90HP, 2 stroke Tohatsu engines. This is capable of taking 15 divers diving with all their gear in comfort & safety
We also have 2 x MCH16 Coltrisub mobile compressors, driven by Honda diesel engine to pump our own cylinders on our trips away . With the MPS gas mixing panel we are able to pump nitrox even on the weekends away. We recently bought & installed a new MCH36 Coltri Sub compressor for the club house. Funds permitting we hope to purchase a new boat next year.

Equipment Maintenance
Maintenance work is carried out on the club equipment on Wednesday evenings over the winter months. Cylinders are also filled over in the club house in Toughers Industrial Estate on Wednesday evenings. Jimmy Galloway (Equipment Officer) and Matt Donnelly his able assistant will always be glad of a helping hand.

Dive Schedule 2011 - 2012
You can look up our Bank Holiday weekend calender for the coming year on this site. Should you decide to join, your mobile number is added to the group txt list so you will be kept informed of what’s going on in the club. We normally book several houses on weekends away, leaves it very affordable & you soon get to know everyone & join in the craic.
Our diving mostly consists of scenic & wreck diving around Ireland which has some of the best diving in Europe.

Diving Officer
Liam Whelan is this seasons Diving Officer & is the person in charge of making all the important decisions and getting all the best diving to be had.
When replying to club txt messages always reply to Liam's mobile number as he will seldom check the number txt is sent out from as is normally sent from PC over the internet.

Scuba Diving Training
Rosemary Finn is this years Training Officer & the person in charge of whipping ye all in to shape for the coming years dive season. Training will commence at the Curragh pool from 7.45 – 9pm every Thursday evening. We retreat to Lumville house after the pool session where we can chat about diving and the club over a drink.
Hope this will give you something to wet your appetite & should you have any questions, feel free to ring me or send us an e-mail. naassac@gmail.com

New members/Trainees 2011/2012
This year Naas Sub-Aqua Club will be taking on new members. You do not have to have any previous experience as full scuba training will be provided over the winter months by our qualified instructors. We will start with a poster campaign throughout the county and surrounding areas in October. This will be followed with free Try-a-Dives in the swimming pool in October/November. Lectures program will be held over four Sunday afternoon & pool snorkel & scuba training will take place every Thursday evening 8 – 9pm throughout the winter months.

Club History

Naas Sub-Aqua Club where we came from.
The Club was formed in 1974 by a few very enthusiastic people who resided in the general Naas area. In the early days of the club there was substantial Army influence in that a fairly high number of the members were serving in the Army. At this time most or all of the diving was carried out from the shore.
In 1975 we were on a diving weekend on Valentia Island and envying all the other clubs in their inflatables whizzing in and out to the good off shore dive sites. The Drogheda SAC passed the word around that they were selling their boat. We purchased it and Benny Maxwell and Bill Gamble organized Aidan Sharkey of Drogheda SAC to leave the boat at the Irish Ropes factory car park on the way home from Valentia. Now we were on the way to more adventitious diving. Our next purchase was to be an air compressor, Benny and Bill sourced this from Tom Mason. This was in the late 70s and now that we had a boat and a compressor we had the resources to dive off shore anywhere around the coast.
In the early 80s with the club expanding we needed another boat. Our next boat was an ex Army aluminium assault craft. The trailer needed to transport this boat was manufactured within the club at very little cost. A new 35 HP Evinrude outboard engine was purchased from Finlay Marine in Monasterivin for this boat. With so much boat capacity and a lot more adventitious diving we now had a serious shortage of air capacity, so it was necessary to acquire another compressor. This we sourced in the UK, its delivery was organized in 1981. As the assault craft was not the most seaworthy dive boat, we decided to sell it and purchase an Osprey 5.1 M RIB. This boat served us well for a good number of years. In the mid 80s we purchased a MK IV Zodiac from Tony Gahan at a very keen price. He also loaned us a 60 HP outboard engine for a couple of years free of charge.
In the late 80s the club had expanded to where we had a membership of about thirty and this put us in a situation where we again short of both boat and compressor capacity. We set about some serious fund raising and Cathriona Byrne organized a fashion show which proved to be very successful. It raised about €3,800 a lot of money at that time and was probably the biggest injection of funds into the club up to then. This assisted in the purchase of a 5.5 M Northcraft RIB and 18 CFM compressor.
As you can imagine there was a lot of wheeling and dealing over a long number of years before the Lotto came to the rescue and made in easier to purchase the boats and equipment that we now have.
A great deal of gratitude is owed to the foresight and hard work a few dedicated members in the early years who nurtured our club through some very difficult years to the very successful club that it is today.
