Schull, St. Patrick's Weekend

Our first weekend away for 2007 was to Schull, Co. Cork. on the St. Patrick’s weekend. It proved challenging for the trainees & qualifieds alike with all but perfect weather conditions & the visibility down to ½ meter at times.

We dived from the small pier at Castle Point on the Saturday morning. While shallow it gave shelter from the North West winds that prevailed. On Sunday we have to retreat to the shelter of Galley cove when winds reached up to gale force 8. After the first dive Eamon our DO decided to cancel any further diving due to deteriorating weather conditions.

Seven trainees braved the harsh conditions to get in their first dives. It was explained to them later that this is almost as bad as it gets. Congratulations to all seven of them on completing the dives under those conditions.
They will surely appreciate diving in good diving conditions after that!

We have two candidates this year for the Leading Diver course, Liam Staunton & Brendan Flynn. Brendan got some practice over the St. Patrick’s weekend doing his DOD’s (Diving Officer of the Day).
