May Bank Holiday weekend seen our group head back south to Valentia Island where we have spent the last three May Bank Holiday weekends. 24 members travelled, clocking up 109 dives over the weekend.
We were joined this year in Valentia by some of our good friends from the Dalkey Scuba Divers who had 17 members down for the weekends diving.
We had five of our new trainees on the trip, Noel Spillane, Carmel Staunton, Terry McCaul, Patrick Maye & Sam Williams. They all enjoyed their diving & getting valuable experience.
Our early birds got their first dive on Friday evening at Illaunanesk, a short distance from Dulas Head.
With the recognisant work done & happy with what we had found on the Friday evening we headed back on Saturday morning to “Illaunanesk” & dived “The Birds” in the afternoon.
Illaulanesk, Valentia Island
Sunday morning we dived “Dulas Head” & retreated to “Basalt Cliffs” in the afternoon. This was probably our best dive of the weekend at Basalt Cliffs with a few finding the caves at the bottom of the sheer wall.
Monday morning the weather had changed with the wind blowing straight in from the west but we got some shelter inside “Dulas Head”. This time I headed in towards the caves & had a very nice dive in the 15 – 20mt range.
Well done to our Diving Officer Rosemary Finn & our “Whip Cracking” Leading Divers, Eamon Russell, Brendan Flynn & Dave Headon for organising another great weekends diving for us.
