Congratulations to our under 11 team

Many congratulations to our under 11 team on winning the KDUL Major League.

Kynog Utd U11 Prosperous 2 Kynog 5 Kynog knew that the last game of the season gave them the chance to win the major league in there first year in existence. A large crowd was present for the local derby and both teams deserve credit for providing huge entertainment and a closely fought match. Kynog had the first chance when pressue from Gary Harnett saw him win the ball and his shot was just wide. A corner came for Kynog and a great cross from Brian mcgrath was met full on by Joseph kenny to put Kynog ahead. Tim Barrett and Luke Harmon were keeping properous in it and only Lee Dempsey in the kynog goal stopped wesley heavey from equalising. Great pressure from Adam lynch saw him win a ball and neatly slot it past the advancing keeper. Kynog kept the pressure on and a pass to conor murray put Kynog 3 up at half time. The second half was not long on when joseph kenny got his second and fourt for kynog which was the result of a great pass from conor donoghue, Now playing with the wind prosperous brough on emmet and a free was won which Wesley heavey curled into the top corner and despite a great effort from Darragh lynch the ball was over the line. Propserous were now playing there best football and only great defending from eoin kelly , Brian elliott and the rock Dylan Donoghue kepy kynog ahead. Kynog finally broke and a lovely link between Colm Staines to Adam cully to declan reilly sat Brian Mcgrath up and kynog were safe. Prosperous to there credit never gave up and won a penalty which was neatly dispatched by Wesley heavey despite the diving effort of lee dempsey who got his hand to it. The final whistle brough great celebrations to Kynog and the season was over . Back to Kynog park where the other Kynog teams formed a guard of honour for the winning team and the party was on.  All the players were men of the match.

Under 14 Match Report

Blessington  2
Kynog Utd   4

Kynog started the better with Shane Merriman forcing a save in the 1st minute from the Blessington keeper. Indeed the visitors were enjoying most of the early possession with Gavin Crowe a constant threat on the left wing. Blessington opened the scoring after 12 minutes after a defensive mix-up allowed the centre forward time to slide the ball past Blaine Treacy. Kynog equalised in the 21st minute when Conor Staines shot from 25 yards and found the top corner. Blessington restored their advantage in the 29th minute when a cross from the left found an unmarked Blessington player some 10 yards out who calmly slotted home. Half time arrived with the hosts leading by two goals to one.
The second half began with Kynog Utd on the attack but unable to break down the Blessington defence. A combination of poor finishing and the final pass going astray was letting Kynog Utd down. Then the equaliser arrived when an Adrian Moran through ball allowed Nathan Gahan time to nip in between two defenders and lob the advancing goalkeeper. The same player shot narrowly wide some 5 minutes later. Patrick Hudson and Craig Gaynor were introduced for Kynog and on 57 minutes a Patrick Hudson pass found Conor Staines whose shot went in off the inside of the post to give Kynog Utd the lead. Blessington pressed forward in search of an equaliser but were met by a solid Kynog defence. In the 67th minute Jack Kenny went on a great run from one penalty area to the other and crossed for Gavin Crowe to volley home and complete the days scoring. Both teams and the match official must be commended for the sporting manner in which the game was played.

u11's match report v kill

Kynog Utd u11’s hosted Kill Celtic at Kynog Park and once again a large crowd was

in attendance to see these two fine teams battle it out in a very exciting game which was much closer than the score line suggests. Kynog started strong with Conor Donoghue and Conor Murray in midfield pushing Kynog forward but Hayley Nolan and Owen Quinan were working tirelessly form Kill to keep Kynog at bay.

A lovely ball from Eoin Kelly set Adam Lynch of on a super run which saw him finish expertly to the Kill net. From the restart Gary Harnett for kynog finished a great move set up by Brian Elliott. Kill responded strongly and got the goal they deserved through a great run from Adam lawlor and half time saw Kynog lead 2-1.

In Kynog’s first season it will always be the first time for something and the first hat trick fell to Joseph Kenny who finished expertly to the net in quick succession. This did no stop Kill who had a number of chances to reply without luck.

The lively Declan Reilly who was having a strong game in midfield was replaced by Colm Staines for Kynog and he scored his first ever goal with a neatly executed volley over the kill keeper.

Again Kill stepped up there game and only brave saves from Lee Dempsey kept them out. Kill finally got the score there play deserved when a penalty was despatched in style by Kyle Drury.

Once again a very sporting match between these two evenly matched sides. kynog were well served by Adam cully , Darragh lynch and Dylan Donoghue with the man of the match going to hat trick hero Joseph Kenny,

The second half was dominated by Castle Villa for long periods and they added goals frequently, however Kynog kept trying and grabbed a late consolation.

U 12 PREMIER DIVISION 01 September 2007 Kilcullen 1:Kynog United 2

Victory for Kynog in first ever game

This was a really excitinggame of football with both teams providing the vlarge attendance to a feast of football. Kynog United playing their first game in the Kildare & District Underage League were more than a match for Killcullen & came away with the three points.

Kilcullen were slow to start & a quick break from the away team saw David Hayes slot in a rebounded shot to put Kynog a goal up. The home team were Quick to respond when a lovely pass by Jack Solan allowed Timmy Metcaile to break through & past the despairing Ross Maher.
Kilcullen were unlucky not to go ahead with Sam Reissig Dowling & Jason McHugh going very close. A similar pattern developed after the break with Evan Treacy putting Kynog back in front just after the interval. Kilcullen pressed hard for the for the equalizer & were thwarted by excellent goalkeeping from Ross Maher
Defender Kevin O’Brien was also prominent in keeper the home team at bay. Despite having numerous chances Kilcullen were nable to convert any of them & Kynog were able to grab the Three point on their debut in the Premier division

Under 14 Major Division 1st September 2007 ATHGARVAN VILLA 0: KYNOG UNITED 2

The under 14 team opened their league campaign with a visit to the Curragh to play Athgarvan  Villa. The home team started the stronger and tested the Kynog defence in the early stages with both Eamon Cox and Cian Gilligan prominent.  Kynog were on the backfoot as Athgarvan continued to win most of the possession and their forwards were looking lively. Blaine Treacy in goal for Kynog had to be quick off his line to deal with a couple of Athgarvan attacks. As the half developed Kynog started to get the ball down and play resulting in Conor Staines shot hitting the post and shortly afterwards the same player had another effort that went narrowly wide bringing the the first half to a close.

The second half saw a much improved performance from Kynog. All over the pitch Kynog players competed in a more determined manner and closed down the opposition. The deadlock was broken after 50 minutes when Shane Merriman linked up with Nathan Gahan who expertly volleyed the ball into the top corner of the Athgarvan net from the edge of the penalty area. Kynog doubled their advantage after 58 minutes when a Jack Kenny through ball found Shane Merriman who crossed to the unmarked Nathan Gahan whose first time shot beat the keeper.

Outstanding for Kynog on the day Cian Gilligan, Ciaran Baselmans, Eamon Cox and Nathan Gahan.

U 11 MAJOR DIVISION - the clubs first historic win

KYNOG UTD 3 MOONE CELTIC 1

Kynog Utd u11's had the honour of starting the new season at home in their new grounds in Kynog Park Timahoe. A large crowd were present to greet Moone Celtic and the children produced an exciting and close game of football.

Early play saw both goalies Lee Dempsey from Kynog and Mark Gynn from Moone pull off some excellent saves. The midfield battle was hard but fair with Aidan Jones of Moone covering every blad of grass for his team. The home team with midfield man Conor Murray finally broke the deadline set up by battling forward Joseph Kenny.

At the turn Kynog struck early again through Garry Harnett but Moone were not to be undone and responded straight away with a great goal from Paudie Morgan. Both teams pushed forward at this stage and on a break away Adam Lynch was fouled setting up a free for Kynog. Upstepped Dylan Donoghue with a pile driver of a free kick into the top corner to restore Kynog's two goal advantage. At this stage Moone threw everything at Kynog with Adam Stephenson driving them forward but the home team held on for the Clubs historic first win as a schoolboys team.

Kynog were well served by Declan Reilly, Luke Herbert, Eoin Kelly with Conor Donoghue and Brian Elliott forming a rock at defence. Thanks to Moone for a very supporting game and we look forward to the return fixture.

Kynog United: A brief background to the chosen title for our new Soccer club

In early Christian times, and particularly from the fifth to the ninth century, the island of Ireland was prolific with monasteries and tiny churches. The Gaelic word 'cill' comes from the latin word 'celle' meaning cell/church and is to be found in hundreds of placenames. When we see a townland or village such as Kilmore ( big church) or Kilnamanagh ( church of the monks) we can immediatley date the settlement as being early Christian.

Many of these settlements were founded at the edge of bogs, for various reasons: access to fuel; the remoteness of the location and good pastureland were all important elements when choosing a site to build a church. There are numerous early ruined sites in county Kildare, including that of the graveyard of Timahoe. I is, of course, inaccurate to refer to this settlement as just a graveyard, but because little of the church remains, it is understandable.

In Comerford's history of Kildare tells us that the 'site of the church is marked by a grave yard, in which some of the walls of the church remain, but are quite featureless.' He further states 'this church as we learn from the list of the histroian Dr. Mac Geoghegan, was dedicated to St. Kynog' In Latin, Mac Geoghegan, describes it thus:- "Ecclesia Sti. Kynogi de Tymochuo". ( the church of St. Kynog of Timahoe)

It is odd that Timahoe ( teach-Mochuo) which was a parish, a town land, and a village dedicated its church to another saint rather than to St. Mochua. It may never be clear why this is so. But quite often, followers of saints, became saints in their own right and so acquired a certain status. Historians have been unable to establish if St. Mochua ever resided in the area. But it would seem most likely that one of his followers ( Kynog) did.

Finally, the reason for spelling the name KYNOG over the more modern Gaelic CIANOG, is to retain the Latin element, as quoted by Mac Goeghegan above. Also, the letter K does not exist in the Irish Lnguage and Christianity and early Latin was contemporaneous, particularly within the monastic life of the island.
