Ballykelly GFC

Ballykelly 0-14, Ardclough 0-9

Ballykelly registered their sixth straight league win on Saturday evening last with a hard fought six point victory over the Ardclough men. The teams were tied at six points apiece at half time but the point taking of Derek McCormack and Alan Hickey in the second period finally put paid to the homes side challenge. McCormack, stationed in midfield, kicked six points over the hour including three superb left footed efforts in the opening half.

Ardclough settled first but for some wayward shooting could have been five points up inside ten minutes. Instead it took a good score from the lively Declan Higgins to get them off the mark. Ardclough kicked the next score as well but it only served to spur Ballykelly to life. For the remainder of the half the teams exchanged scores with Derek Mc (3), John Forde, Daryll Cullen and Andy Kelly all registering points in the opening period. At the change of ends the scores stood at six points apiece.
Ardclough again made all the early running in the second half and had two points on the board inside five minutes. However the Ballykelly men started to make use of the wind that now favoured them and rattled off some superb long range points from McCormack and Hickey. Despite being three points in arrears with the clock running down, Ardclough launched a foray up the field that ended with Dom Walsh in goal pulling off a fine save to deny them. Sub Liam Binions finished the Ballykelly scoring and left Ballykelly victors by five points.

Best for Ballykelly were Derek Mc, Alan Hickey, Colm McHale, Liam Behan and Kevin Walsh whilst Ardclough’s best were Declan Higgins, Aidan Griffin, Paul Kelly and Diarmuid Carr.

Club notes
The senior team have maintained their table topping form with their five point victory over Ardclough on Saturday evening. At half time the game was in the balance but a strong finish and well taken points from Derek McCormack and Alan Hickey finally saw Ballykelly home.
Congrats to the ladies Under 16’s on their great victory over the Larries in their semi final on Saturday afternoon. They led from start to finish in what was a great team display. Best of luck to them in their forthcoming final!
The club would also like to congratulate their resident Laois man Ger Byrne; and Carol Mooney on tying the knot last Friday. A great day and night was had by the large crowd in attendance in the Hazel Hotel.
The large scale cleanup on the pavilion continues on Saturday 28th of April with a days painting being organised. The club are working towards having its first annual BBQ on the weekend of the 23rd of June but work is needed on the grounds and clubhouse first. We would hope to have as many volunteers with brushes and gear in tow on the day, so please come along and help out even if only for an hour.

ICA in Monasterevin

The inaugural meeting of Monasterevin’s Irish Country Woman’s Association was held in the CYMS Hall on 20 June 1955. Sixty prospective members attended to hear Miss Sheila Connolly from the head office of the ICA explain the role of the association as fostering a love of the country by improving living conditions in the countryside and raising the standard of living by arranging a happy and useful social like in rural area.

50 years have passed since and the current president Kathleen Dunne is delighted to say that the Monasterevin guild is alive and well. There is a monthly meeting where members are still discovering new areas of interest and discuss matters of mutual concern.

Meetings are a forum for discussing matters that affect the home and community. Members have the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills in a wide range of areas from gardening, flower arranging, home decorating, cookery, arts and crafts, and woodwork to first aid and computer training. The women study historical, literary and cultural subjects. Outings are an important aspect of the educational programme and some of the guild’s members have travelled far and wide.

Other committee members include; vice president Nellie Brady, honorary treasurer Mary Fitzpatrick and other committee members Helen Whelan, Josephine Murtagh, Christine Worrell, Rose Prendergast, Dolly Connolly, Peggy McFadden, Jean Kingston, Mona Fitzpatrick and Sadie Duffy.

The Monasterevin Guild says that it continues to satisfy the ideal for which the ICA was founded “for educational and recreational purposes to promote the health, education and welfare of the people of Ireland”.

"Bloom" is the Irish show to rival the Chelsea Flower Show taking place in the Phoenix Park on the June Bank Holiday Weekend 1 – 4 July. Elma along with her sponsors Tesco Ireland are reinforcing the relationship between the human race and the environment with a unique garden design and ethos surrounding their participation in the event.
The garden is entitled "Harmony with nature…..every little helps…." and includes a natural swimming pond bringing us back to our nostalgic days of outdoor swimming amongst nature. St. Evin's Gaels

St Evin Gaels 2-7, Castledermot 1-6: A tremendous second half performance from the lads ensured a memorable MFL title for the town. The game started with Kevin Dunne and John Hyland winning vital possession around midfield but scorable chances went abegging.

Castledermot, on the other hand, broke down the field to score twice against the run of play before John Hyland went off injured. While Johnny’s departure had an unsettling effect on the team, nevertheless points from Brian White, two from Paul Kelly and one from Kevin Dunne helped to keep us in the hunt, with Castledermot having added two more of their own. At half time, the teams were level on four each. Playing into the breeze in the second half, the lads showed tremendous resolve and all six defenders were topclass.

The telling score arrived when a great series of passes opened up the opportunity for Kevin Fitzpatrick to crack a piledriver to the net. The Gaels then had a purple patch with Brian While and Jason Dunne adding points and Wayne Carter pouncing for an opportunist goal. Castledermot rallied hitting two points and a consolation goal on the stroke of time.

A tremendous day for the team, mentors, supporters and both clubs. Team/Panel: D Fogarty, C Havens, K Christie, G Kelly, P Cullen, D Howard, E Stapleton, K Dunne (capt), J Hyland, B White, P Kelly, W Carter, K Fahey, K Fitzpatrick, C Kemmy, S Kennedy, J Dunne, G Synott, J Scully, S Luttrell, S Crabbe, A Mullarkey.

Scholarships for two Monasterevin students

Congratulations to two of St Paul’s secondary School's past pupils, Monasterevin who have been awarded academic scholarships from the Institute of Technology, Carlow.

The scholarships were awarded due to these students' high points in the Leaving Certificate. The scholarship winners were Nicola Mahar who is studying for a BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Studies and Elaine Buckley, who is studying for a BA (Hons) in Legal Studies. Both students are in the first year of their course.

Other St. Paul's News

The equine tradition continues also in St Paul’s with five students from the school taking part in the All-Ireland inter schools hunter trials in Ballyhale, Co Kilkenny recently. A team of Ciara Fahey, Brendan Fahey and Ronan Whelan took on a challenging course of 25 fences. A tiny snag at the coffin fence meant they were out of the winner’s enclosure. Shane O’Mahony competed in the senior championship, and was unlucky to shave the top of the knockable fence. The youngest competitor was first year student Mark Morrissey who rode a great round in testing conditions, with the same coffin fence posing a problem! Congratulations to all for their excellent turn out of their horses and better luck next year.

Monasterevin AFC Schoolboys

The Kildare and District Schoolboys League is now entering the final quarter of the 2006/2007 season, with all cup and shield finals scheduled for the first week in May, most if not all league titles will have been decided by then.

Monasterevin Under-10s continue their remarkable run, having been promoted to the Premier Division halfway through their first season, they remain unbeaten in the top flight, with four wins and one draw from five games played. Under-12s have had a tougher second half to the season, lying third going into the midwinter break, four straight defeats in February saw them slip to seventh. However, a narrow 3-2 defeat in the cup to league leaders Castle Villa, followed by a 3-3 draw away to Edenderry Town, and a 2-1 home win over Kill Celtic has seen them turn the tide somewhat, in time for their upcoming Umbro Shield quarter-final.

Under 14s have topped their division since the start of the season, with ten wins and one draw from eleven games, they have three games remaining, all away, two of which are against Kilcock Celtic and Kildare Town who lie just behind them in second and third place respectively. They also have the cup quarter-final coming up away to Premier Division side Sallins Celtic.

Under 16s currently lie in third place in their division, behind Edenderry Town and Athy Town with three games to play, they have also reached the KDFL Shield semi-final in which they will play host to Kildare Town.
