Monasterevin Credit Union

Credit Unions have launched a campaign to encourage people to get a loan from their local credit union to fund their Christmas shopping instead of dealing with money lenders. Monasterevin Credit Union have produced a leaflet in cooperation with Kildare Money Advice and Budgeting Service giving hints and advice on how to financially plan for Christmas and indeed for all spending.

If interest charged by the credit union and rates charged by moneylenders e.g. €1,000 borrowed from the credit union and repaid over one year by weekly payments of €20.60 , would cost the member €1050.60, the same €1,000 borrowed from a moneylender and repaid over one year by weekly repayments of €30.00 would cost the member €1,530. The member who chooses the credit union will save €479.40.

At the launch on Thursday 16 October Paddy Lavery, Coordinator of Kildare MABS, said that he hoped that members would find the leaflet useful. Councillor Fionnula Dukes congratulated Monasterevan Credit Union for their commitment to the community and said that the leaflet would sow the seed of responsible money management into the future.

The credit union will distribute the leaflet with the annual report and it is also available in the office.
