About Local Studies

Local Studies forms an integral part of the Kildare Library Service, in partnership with Archives and Genealogy . It is the focal point for local history research in County Kildare for historians and enthusiasts alike.

The Local Studies collections includes an extensive range of material including: books, journals, newspapers, photographs, postcards, maps, audio-visual material (including oral history recordings) and a variety of ephemera. Material published about or by people in Kildare is the focus of the collection, though the collection also includes an extensive general Irish history collection including a significant collection of books published before 1850.

The majority of books and periodicals in the collection have been added to the public library catalogue and can be searched for through the online library catalogue; please note that updating of collections listed is ongoing.

Local Studies also facilitates access to digitised newspapers and subscribes to Find My Past database of digital records.

Find My Past

Find My Past provides access to billions of digitised records including many Irish sources such as parish records, military service records, prison registers, travel records and census returns. It is particularly useful for family history research and for those undertaking research on those involved in World War I and the 1916 Rising. Access Find My Past at any full-time Kildare library branch via a public access PC or WiFi.

Access to Find My Past is supported by the County Kildare Decade of Commemorations Committee & the Department of Tourism, Culture, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media under the Decade of Centenaries 2012-23 initiative.
