Bedtime books are full of childhood fears and desires and transformations. They are safe places where children can advance in to new exotic terrains where they learn about themselves and the world.
Nicole Tilley uses classical children’s stories to create silhouettes and child-like characters that come into being through the cutting and sewing of materials chosen for symbolic content.
Some of them are fantasy creatures, of the kind that inhabit children’s books and the childhood imagination, the kind that we carry with us in memory through in to our adult lives - the creature under the bed; the fairy and the toys that come alive at night.
They are the beloved toys that we carried around as children until they eventually fell apart or were discarded, lost, kept or passed on to our own children.
