Cass McGuire returns from America, having lived out her prime working in a bar on Skid Row, all the while thinking about her home and family in Ireland. She has high expectations of the welcome that will await her but is disappointed to discover that it was a one-sided love affair. Finding her American ways brash and unfamiliar, her brother places her in a nursing home where, with her fellow residents, she selectively remembers her disappointing life.
A companion piece to Philadelphia, Here I Come! performed last year by the Moat Club, which prepared us for the fate of a young emigrant to America, here, Friel focuses on the returning émigrée and gives us a fragile and poignant memory play.
