Vivid and insightful, this heartrending opera by Grigory Frid recreates the world of 13 year-old Anne Frank in hiding, living in hope and fear, longing for normality for herself and her family.
Opera Theatre Company commemorates the 50thanniversary of the opening of the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam with this atmospheric opera, composed in 1969. The diary entries reveal the enormous emotional pressure Anne Frank was under, yet her powerful optimism and unbending will to live continue to inspire awe.
Sung in English, the focus is on Anne’s original words – her profound thoughts and naive joy over a gift or a patch of blue sky, her fear and determination to remain courageous, the budding love for Peter, her sense of humour, and deep hopes for freedom – all find moving and eloquent expression in the poignant score.
With David Brophy conducting the OTC Ensemble, and direction by Ingrid Craigie and Annilese Miskimmon, this compelling production should not be missed.
