The Irish Basketball Association is the National Governing Body for
the sport of basketball in Ireland. It was officially formed in 1947
and affiliated to FIBA in the same year.
The Association has responsibility
for the promotion, development, administration and co-ordination of
all basketball activities in Ireland and Northern Ireland.
The Primary focus of our mission statement is to increase the participation
levels of basketball throughout Ireland and to provide a professionally
managed courses, competitions, leagues and services to the basketball
public with the aim of improving the overall level of basketball in
this country.
The Irish Basketball office is based in the National Basketball Arena
in Tallaght, Dublin 24.
The Irish Schools Basketball Office is in Mount Temple School, Dublin.
The current Schools Development Officer is Paul Ryan
Irish Basketball, in association with ESB and the Irish Sports Council,
launched the Community Hoops Programme in May 1998. The programme
aims to install vandal resistant outdoor hoops in parks, playgrounds,
schools, estates and communities across Ireland, providing free and
open access to the sport for everyone - player and non-player alike.
Over 200 hoops have been installed to date.
The National Basketball Arena
The National Basketball Arena is situated in Tymon Park , Tallaght,
Dublin 24. It is the largest indoor sports venue in Ireland and opened
in February 1993. The Arena is a thoroughly modern facility, architecturally
designed to be functional, comfortable and client conscious.
