According to the Irish Basketball Association's Website there are
currently over 150,000 people actively playing basketball at some
level in Ireland.
It states that basketball is the second most popular physical activity
among the 14-18 age group.
The breakdown is as follows:
Soccer 35%
Basketball 33%
GAA 18%
Golf 8%
The Sprite National Cup is the premier event in Irish Basketball,
with live coverage of the finals on Network 2.
Over 100 teams participated at Senior and Junior level in the 1999/2000
Sprite Cup.
There are 585 post-primary schools registered with the Irish Schools
Basketball office. These schools participate in the Cadbury Time-Out
All Ireland Leagues, the Bank of Ireland Schools Cup and the Sunny
D 3x3 Challenge.
There are approximately 1,000 primary schools registered with the
Irish Mini-Basketball Association. They compete in Jamborees and Blitzes
at both local, regional and National level.
