This department is responsible for the administration of public education, primary, post primary and special education.
The mission of the department is to provide high-quality education, which will enable individuals to achieve their full potential and to participate fully as members of society and contribute to Ireland's social, cultural and economic development.

The department also has the following high level goals

  • To promote equity and inclusion.
  • To promote quality outcomes.
  • To promote lifelong learning.
  • To plan for education that is relevant to personal, social, cultural and economic needs.
  • To enhance the capacity of the Department of Education and Science for service delivery, policy formulation, research and evaluation.

The Department of Education is responsible for the central administration of all aspects of education and related services in Northern Ireland except the higher and further education sector, which is within the remit of the Department for Employment and Learning.

This department has responsibility for the development of pre-school, primary, post-primary and special education; the youth service; the promotion of community relations within and between schools; and teacher education and salaries.
The department also aims to ensure that children, through participation at schools, reach the highest possible standards of educational achievement. The department also promotes personal well-being and social development.

The North Eastern Education and Library Board was established in 1973. The Board consists of 35 members, appointed by the Minister responsible for the Department of Education for Northern Ireland (DE).
The Board is the local education and library authority for most of County Antrim and the eastern part of County Derry.

The South Eastern Education and Library Board (NI)

The Board is the local authority for education, library and youth services in the district council areas of Ards, Castlereagh, Down, Lisburn and North Down in Northern Ireland. Its mission is to raise the standards of learning and levels of achievement of the people of the Board’s area through the provision of high quality education, library and youth services.

The Southern Education and Library Board (SELB)

The Southern Education and Library Board serves the district council areas of Armagh, Banbridge, Cookstown, Craigavon, Dungannon & South Tyrone, Newry & Mourne. It spans 1,450 square miles, with a total population of approximately 332,000 people; including 75,000 pupils and with over 137,900 registered library users.

The mission of the board is to ensure that high quality education, youth and library support services exist throughout the area in order to promote learning, provide opportunities for personal development, encourage individuals to acquire core skills, promote spiritual and moral values in individuals and in the community a sense of shared responsibility, repect for one another and appreciation of the worth of the individual person.

The Western Education and Library Board (WELB) in Northern Ireland is the local authority for the provision of education, library and youth services in the Council areas of Omagh, Fermanagh, Derry, Strabane and Limavady. The Board has statutory responsibility for primary and secondary education within its area and it is also responsible for the provision of a youth service and library services to schools and the public.

The Board's Administrative Headquarters is located in the county town of Omagh, with district offices in Derry and Enniskillen. The area has a population of over 280,000. There are over 63,000 pupils attending schools and over 105,000 registered library users. The Board provides or maintains 12 Nurseries, 194 Primary, 10 Special, 36 Secondary, 4 Grammar Schools and 16 Branch Libraries.
