Historic Win for Maynooth's David Campbell

athletics011_200.jpgDavid Campbell won both the 800m and 1500m titles at the National Senior Track & Field Championships in Santry last weekend. The last person to achieve a similar feat was Eamonn Coughlan in 1981.

The Maynooth man's time for the 800m was 1.49.45. He has run 1.46.05 at this distance, but taking a National Title is a fantastic achievement for an athlete who has been showing great form recently.

In the 1500m, David finished strongly to beat Colm Rooney of Clonliffe Harriers and Liam Reale of Limerick A.C. in a time of 3.45.21. He was delighted with the historic double. His personal best at this distance is 3:41.81 which he ran earlier this year.

David trains in Maynooth and runs for St. Coca's A.C.
His win at the weekend guarantees his place on the Irish team for the World Athletics Championships in Osaka, Japan where he will run in the 800m. The 11th IAAF World Championships take place in the Nagai Stadium, Osaka from August 25 to September 2, 2007.
