Adelaide Masters to reach exciting conclusion at Mondello

adelaide-mastersAnother fantastic season of Motorcycle Racing will come to its conclusion at Mondello Park on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th of October, with the finale of the Adelaide Masters Series, Ireland’s top Short Circuit Motorcycle Racing Championship.

The fourteen race series, which is backed by Motorcycle Insurance Specialist Adelaide Insurance Services, will have its final three races over two days, on the International circuit layout, with the bulk of the racing action taking place on the Sunday. The headlining Superbike Class is all but sown up by Dubliner Derek Sheils, who only needs to finish in the points in Saturday’s opening race to clinch his first Adelaide Masters title, but the Supersport class will go right down to the wire.

The smaller engined Supersport machines have provided the greatest excitement over the course of the season with full grids and a very competitive field at all four previous events. Having missed the first three races of the season, David Haire has amazingly dragged himself back into championship contention and heads into the final event of the year tied for the lead with Kilkenny's Richie Ryan. Haires' fellow Ulstermen Carl Phillips, Luke Johnston and Jamie Patterson are also in contention for the championship win, but realistically the winner should come from the top three of Ryan, Haire and Phillips.

The Superbike series has just two contenders with Derek Sheils leading the way from Kilkenny's Damien Byrne. For Byrne to lift the title he would need to score three wins while Sheils picks up less than four points. The battle will more than likely be over by Saturday as all that Sheils has to do to clinch the championship is finish higher than twelfth, even if Byrne wins the race. The battle for the runner up spot is far from settled however, as despite Sheils being out of reach David Haire could still overhaul Byrne to complete a remarkable recovery from an early season injury.

The Superbike and Supersport Cup classes, for less experienced racers have also been decided with Frank Smith dominating Superbike and Conor Parkhill dominating Supersport. Of the supporting classes four championships are still to be decided. The Pre-Injection champion will be either Paraic Dooley or Colm Kearney, Paul Tobin will take the Supertwins series if he can pick up just one more championship point, the Sidecar battle is between Terry O'Reilly and Peter O'Neill and the Lightweight Supersport series can only be won by Thomas Gregory or Andrew Whearty.

The final Adelaide Masters event of the season will see the return of the Grand Final for the first time since last Octobers' series finale. For this race the top Superbike and Supersport racers will come together for a non-championship race where prize money rather than points will be the goal. The riders will race for an overall prize fund with Cup riders also racing for their own additional prize fund. The Grand Final will take place after the championship races have been completed and should be a fitting end to what has been a great seasons racing.

Admission to either day of the Adelaide Masters Series Finale is just €10 for adults with under 16's admitted free. All admission includes a complimentary event programme. Further information can be found on the championships' dedicated web site www.adelaidemasters.ie which includes news, information and video interviews with some of the series top contenders.
