The monthly meeting of Athy Town Council was informed that sampling of the water from the River Barrow will be ongoing.
The County Council's Director of Services, Joe Boland, informed the meeting that the quality of the barrow's water is "very good", and compares favourably with that of any of the country's waterways.
Mr Boland assured the meeting that monitoring would continue in order to maintain the quality of Athy's water.
Mr. Boland encouraged people to report any sightings of illegal discharges into the river.
