Local Woman Secures Prestigious Engineering Scholarship

Kildare North Fianna Fail TD, Michael Fitzpatrick has congratulated local woman Triona Byrne from Celbridge on winning a Science Foundation Ireland/Dell You Women in Engineering Scholarship Award.

“Triona is studying Engineering in Trinity College and is one of 10 winners nationwide. The Scholarship Award is designed to raise the profile of engineering among women and to encourage more women into the sector.”

“The Scholarship is worth approximately €20,000 to Triona which I know will provide great support to her as she continues her studies.”

“As well as financial support, Dell will provide Triona with a notebook computer and a research active mentor will also be assigned throughout her undergraduate career and she will have the opportunity to spend the summer months in a research internship in university or industry.”

“Triona was one of 56 applicants this year for 10 Awards so this really is a great achievement for Triona and for her teachers at St. Wolstan’s Community College in Celbridge.”

“I am delighted that the interest in the Scholarship Awards was so strong this year. Women are traditionally under-represented in the field of engineering so it is essential that every encouragement possible is given to them. The Government has recognised that the development of the smart economy is vital for our economic recovery and development in the future. The smart economy will require more engineers of all disciplines so it is fitting that women are being encouraged with these Scholarship Awards.”

“I wish Triona every success with her studies and her career,” concluded Deputy Fitzpatrick.
