Cllr Fiona O`Loughlin pays tribute to an Taoiseach Bertie Ahern

It was with  regret that I heard of the Taoiseachs  statement on Wed 2nd April that he would tender his resignation as Taoiseach on May 6th. The statement came as I was chairing the Kildare electoral area monthly meeting and I felt it appropriate to interrupt the agenda for a brief period to pay tribute to the man who has been at the helm of National Govt in Ireland for the last 11 years, and to his singular visionary leadership both during that time, and indeed as Minister for Labour and Finance.  I was gratified that Director Des Page, on behalf of the Manager joined in paying tribute to Bertie Ahern also.

I have no doubt that Bertie Aherns legacy will benefit generations to come. His selfless and huge commitment to the island of Ireland is unequalled and will never be repeated.  I have had the privilege of being closely involved with the last two General Election campaigns with the Taoiseach and can attest to his huge energy, dedication and passion for the political process and always…..he put people before politics. There is no doubt that he made personal sacrifices for the sake of politics, and as I said at last Thursday nights National Executive meeting, I have no doubt that he will bring his unique and many talents and experience to other stages for the benefit of others.

Tanaiste Brian Cowen is a very worthy successor and as a Fianna Fail member and public representative I look forward to working under his leadership for many years to come.
