National Heritage Week is co-ordinated by the Heritage Council as part of European Heritage Days – a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Union in which more than 50 countries participate each year.

In County Kildare, National Heritage Week is co-ordinated and supported by Local Authority Heritage Officers, their colleagues and with numerous local heritage groups and organisations.

National Heritage Week 2021 - With the continuation of public health restrictions around social gatherings due to COVID-19, The Heritage Council once again invited groups to organise a heritage project. The project approach is designed to promote the sharing of experience and knowledge. In 2021 The Heritage Council looked for projects whose approach includes 'heritage newcomers', 'heritage sharing', and 'heritage for all ages'.
