One Singer, One Song An Exhibition by Jackie Askew

Jackie Askew's work, drawn from memory, represents the experiences both seen and heard by the artist over the last four years, "a direct response to the very fabric and history that is embodied in a small community. It gleans the artist's impressions from traces of history, such as a railway which was once the socio-economic lifeline for the area. The old line, once a means for emigrés to return to family and roots from the turn of the last century to the early sixties, is now buried by a new housing development. Experimenting with combinations of various materials, these experiments are conveyed in imagery and given meaning in their recording."

Having grown up in Newbridge, County Kildare, Jackie has liver in West Clare since 1998 and was one of the founding members of the Courthouse Studios in Ennistymon, which have recently re-located to Lisdoonvarna. A graduate of The National Cillege of Art & Design in Dublin, she moved to London in 1987 to pursue post-graduate work at St.Martin's School of Art.One Singer, One Song - An Exhibition By Jackie Askew

In 1993 she returned to live in Kilkenny where she worked at the city's arts office. Over the last ten years Jackie has had work selected for some of the major contempory art exhibitions around the country including Corl Arts Fest'94, The Claremorris Open Exhibition 1997 and Iontas, the National Exhibition of small work in Sligo in 1999.

In 2000 a solo exhibition of her painting, entitled The Road West, toured around a number of venues nationwide. Her work can be found in both private and public collections in Ireland. This is a rare chance to see the work of this young contempory Irish artist in Newbridge.

This Exhibition continues until Saturday 21st December. Gallery opening hours are as follows Monday to Saturday 10.00am to 1.00pm, and 2.00pm to 5.00pm.
