Rodrigo & Gabriela

This sensational Mexican guitar duo, Rodrigo y Gabriela, have in the last couple of months shot to national prominence with the release of their new CD Re-Foc and a Late Late Show appearance. During 2002 Rodrigo y Gabriela packed pub venues across the country. For their 2003 Irish Tour, three other musicians will support them and the show will feature much of the outstanding compositions from Re-Foc and some exciting new material written on a recent visit to their native Mexico. They are set to play the Riverbank Arts Centre on Wednesday 25 June next as part of their Irish Tour.

The Mexican-born guitar duo of Rodrigo y Gabriela have been playing together since 1994. Back then, however, things were slightly different. Although they both owned cheap Spanish guitars from an early age, the acoustic virtuosos began their legacy with electric guitars in a heavy metal group.

Before long they decided to travel, bought some semi-acoustic steel stringed guitars and travelled to Ixtapa, Southern Mexico. They began learning some popular songs for live performance and soon established a repertoire of classics

Ironically they chose to avoid the trappings of comfort. Sunny old Mexico became drizzly old Ireland. Before long they had settled, won over by the charms of Dublin city. After a long and prosperous stay in Ireland they spent some time travelling around Europe, in particular Denmark and Spain, playing selections from their album. Travelling inspired their songwriting and before long they had compiled a whole new selection of original songs.

Their performance is full of fire and passion, bringing a little sunshine to their adopted Irish home.
