The Riverbank Arts Centre is again exploring visual art through the
medium of photography. Experience this mysterious subject and delve into
a side of culture that is hidden from a large percentage of the human
race and brought to light by the work of talented Irish artist Louise
Cherry.
This body of photographic work explores the concepts of exclusion,
gender and family. Based on the private Gentlemen’s Club institutions
in Dublin, the work is intended to be a light-hearted reflection of a
family tradition combined with a serious investigation into an institution
which has, throughout history, excluded women. The work is a reflection
of the artist’s own personal experience and using herself as
a model, she explores her own identity through the re-conceptualisation
of her family history using photographic images.
Louise Cherry graduated with a 1st class degree in photography from
the Dublin Institute of Technology in June 2001. She currently lectures
in photography in Dublin, whilst also continuing to make her own work.
In September 2000, Louise was invited to exhibit as the Irish representative
at the 4th International Photography Gathering in Syria. Members Only
was chosen to be exhibited during the 2001 ‘Rencontres Internationales
de la Pohotographie in Arles, France, and was subsequently exhibited
at the Galerie D’Essai in Paris. A copy of this body of work
now forms part of the French National Library Collection.
