Laban Dance Summer School in Kildare

An Archive Page StampKildare County Council Arts Service, through its three-year Dance Artist in Residence programme with Cathy O’ Kennedy identified a need for training in Community Dance in the Kildare area. As a result, the Laban Guild Community Dance Leaders Course was established in 2002, in association with Riverbank Arts Centre, Newbridge. Twenty-two dancers, artists, actors, teachers and community workers attend the course.

Following on from the success of the Community Dance Leaders Course, Kildare County Council is pleased to announce that a Laban Guild Summer School will take place in NUI Maynooth Kildare from Tuesday 5th August to Saturday 9th August 2003.

A provisional programme for the Summer School includes practical workshops/classes in

  • Contemporary Dance
  • Integrated Dance work
  • Laban Summer SchoolDance in Education, with emphasis on the Dance Strand of the Physical Education
  • Curriculum for primary schools
  • Youth Dance
  • Integrated Dance work
  • Choreography
  • Dance in a community Context
  • Dance Technique


The programme is based on Laban principles i.e. a systematic analysis of movement in relation to dynamic use of the body in space. However, previous experience of Laban’s work or other dance techniques, is not essential.
