The Gerard Manley Hopkins Summer School celebrates the great poet, Hopkins, his links with Co. Kildare and all his interests: poetry, painting, music, the Arts, philosophy, Nature. Hopkins had many links with Kildare: with Maynooth, with Clongowes Wood, and most of all with Monasterevin, ‘one of the props and struts of my existence’.

Summer School Highlights

 

Traditional Irish music; Art Exhibitions (including the work of Kildare artists: Derek Fitzimons, Sculptor and Gil Berry, Painter), opening on Saturday 19th and on show all week. Also, a Guided Tour of Peatland World.

Gerard Manley Hopkins Summer SchoolInternational Poetry Readings each evening at 4pm and in the Festival Club at 9.30pm. This year, led by Desmond Egan (three of whose books in translation will be launced: Spanish, Polish and Greek). Leading international poets include: Scholl; (Austria); Bryll (Poland); Kudriavitski (Russia); Piersanti (Italy) and many more others.

Conor Mahony will facilitate a Words and Music Workshop.

Saturday July 19th 2.30pm
The Poetry Workshop this year will be conducted by Professor and noted Critic, Kitabayashi (Japan). Participants need to book in advance for what has become a very popular event.

The Classical Concert in Moore Abbey features distinguished Irish pianist and composer, Philip Carty.

Sunday 20th July 10am
NUI-Maynooth. President NUI, Seamus Smyth’s presents a lecture on The Orange Order.

Friday, July 25th 10am
Translation Workshop with translators from all over the world.

Lectures on Hopkins and his poetry take place all week in the mornings from 10am and feature world famous scholars including Patrick Samway, (USA); Enda MacDonagh (Maynooth); Chantal Bizzini (France). A special parallel session for students has been arranged on Monday and Tuesday.

Of special interest will be two illustrated lectures,
Monday 21st July 8pm
The Sculpture of James McKenna Monasterevin.

Wednesday 23rd July 8pm
The Work of Louis le Broquy Riverbank Theatre. The Artist will be in attendance.
