Kildare Footballers promoted to Division 1

Kildare manager Jack O'Connor leads Kildare to promotion to Division 1 of the Allianz National Football League

Kildare beat Meath in an epic encounter at St Conleth's Park in Newbridge, by 1-14 to 0-14, in the bpromotion play-off yesterday, Sunday 13 June 2021.  Kildare were ten points ahead of their neighbours Meath with 15 minutes to go. But Meath fought back to within 3 points, and deep into injury time Meath sub Darragh Campion almost got an equalizing goal, only to be denied by Kildare goalkeeper Mark Donnellan, with a tremendous save.

Kildare were playing with 14 men, when Meath staged their comeback, that almost secured extra time in injury time. Meath had been reduced to 13 men in injury time when Conor McGill and Brian Conlon were sent off. 200 supporters witnessed the game due to Covid restrictions, and they celebrated a return to Division 1 for Kildare next season. Jimmy Hyland's fifth minute goal was the difference between the 2 sides.

Kildare now return to top-flight football in 2022.

Allianz Football League Division 2 Final will take place on Sunday 20 June between Kildare and Mayo. Venue and date and time to be confirmed.

In the Leinster GAA Football Senior Championship, Kildare will play the winners of Offaly and Louth on Sunday 4 July 2021.

And congratulations to the Kildare Hurlers who also gained promotion, to Division 2A, after defeating Mayo by 2-24 to 1-19 at MacHale Park, Castlebar on Saturday 12 June.

Kildare Hurlers will play Carlow next in the Joe McDonagh Cup Group A match at 4pm on Saturday 26 June 2021 in Newbridge.
