‘Untitled (permutation of five coloured elements)’ - Roy Johnston

Medium: Acrylic on board

Dimensions: 163cm x 136cm

Born in Pomeroy county Tyrone in 1936, Roy Johnston studied at Stranmillis College Belfast then the Belfast College of Art. He has exhibited across Ireland. His work is included in collections in Ireland and the UK, including the collections of the Ulster Museum, Belfast, Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane and the Irish Museum of Modern Art.

At first glance this painting by Roy Johnston could be seen as similar to the work of Piet Mondrian, in that it appears to be the flat non-representational composition made up of distinct individual colours. Looking closer, however, it is clear there is something quite different in Johnston’s work, rather than flat colour, the background blue has a textured look being built up of complimentary colours. The squares of colour at the bottom of the composition are shaded to give them a more solid, almost three-dimensional look.
