County Kildare is a Golfer’s Paradise
It was the centre of the sporting world in September 2006, when the Kildare Hotel and Country Club hosted the Ryder Cup Matches on its championship Palmer Course.
The K Club
The K Club (Tel: 01 6017399) is the jewel in our golfing crown, with the second course and new pavilion just completed. All eyes will turn to the tiny village of Straffan to watch America attempt to win back the Ryder Cup from Europe.
Kildare and the European Tour
The K Club has been the home of the Smurfit European Open since 1995 and the Montgomerie Course at Carton House hosted the Nissan Irish Open in 2005 and will again in 2006.
Oldest & Newest
Golf in Kildare doesn’t stop there, however. There is a golf club or driving
range in every corner of the county, from the oldest, The
Curragh Golf Club (Tel: 045 441714), to the newest,
Dunmurry Springs Golf Club,
which has been built to full USPGA specifications and makes the most of the
location's enviable natural resources - springs, grasses and spectacular views.
We also have one of the most picturesque, Kilkea Castle, wrapped around a stunning medieval castle, once home to the Fitzgeralds, later Dukes of Leinster, and one of the most novel – at Highfield just off the M4, you tee off from the roof of the clubhouse!
The PGA National Ireland at Palmerstown House, Johnstown, is the only course to hold such a designation in Ireland. This Christy O'Connor Jnr designed course is destined for greatness.
