<< Back to previous page

  • Tips for Dining in IrelandFor good value, look out for "early bird menus" or at lunch-time, special two-course deals

  • Book ahead at weekends

  • In restaurants, a 10% tip is usual for good service. Do not feel obliged to tip if you feel the service was not up to scratch

  • Breakfast dishes are usually available in cafés up to 11am or midday. Lunch is usually available between noon and 3pm and varies enormously from soup and sandwiches, paninis, wraps and salads to large hot meals including roast meat and vegetables, (most will also have options for vegetarians) reflecting Irelands division into those who "eat their dinner in the middle of the day" and those who eat it in the evening. Evening meals are usually available from 6pm until about 9.30pm, although ethnic restaurants generally serve meals until later

  • Irish law prohibits smoking in workplaces, which include restaurants, pubs, cafés and night clubs. Many pubs have created pleasant, well-lit and heated outdoor areas for smokers

  • Irish law prohibits the presence of children (under 18 year olds) in licensed premises after 9pm except during the period of 1st May to 30th September, during which children are permitted to be in licensed premises until 10pm
