Naas Newbridge & District Local History

County Kildare - the Pedigree County - is the home of the Horse Industry in Ireland and boasts three racecourses.  Racing takes place at the Curragh, Naas and Punchestown which is a very famous National Hunt venue.  The Derby - Irelands richest race - is run on The Curragh in June each year.  Many of the leading racing stables and stud farms are located in the County.

Kildare is one of the oldest towns in Ireland and retains its original layout.  The ancient Cathedral and the Market House are of particular significance.  The National Stud and the Japanese Gardens are located in the vicinity of Kildare town.

Naas is another ancient town in County Kildare which is steeped in history, being once the seat of Kings, and of the last High King Doolan who lived on the South Moat.  This is the county town and the centre for Local Government and the Courts.  It is within easy reach of Dublin and is well served by public transport.  There are many industrial estates in the vicinity, it is adjacent to the M7 motorway.  Naas is justly proud of its restaurants and other venues for socializing.

Newbridge is a modern success story which grew  around the establishment of a British Military Barracks at the beginning of the 19th Century.  Newbridge Silverware is one of the oldest industries in the town, it was established in 1934.  The American pharmaceutical company Wyeth, Oral B Healthcare, and a number of smaller industries provide employment.  Kildare Heritage and Genealogy Company provides a full service for people who wish to trace their family roots in County Kildare.

Naas, Newbridge and Kildare were all Garrison towns during British rule.

The Curragh is situated between Newbridge and Kildare. The Curragh Plains house many military barracks and is the headquarters of the Irish Army. Legend has it that St Patrick spent some time in this area. Also, St Brigid had her Monastery in Kildare and legends abound about her.

Soroptimist International Naas Newbridge and District Club also encompasses areas of Kildare such as thriving Kilcullen and West Wicklow, which includes the historical town of Dunlavin.
