Shaker History

They are an amazingly talented and industrious people who have lived and
worked in rural communities in the eastern and central United States since 1774.
They have become in the last twenty years the centre of a cult of artistic
appreciation expressing itself in books, symposia, and six-figure auction
prices. Ironically, all this recent attention to the United Society of
Believers in Christ's First and Second Appearing, as they called themselves,
is for a group of humble people who sought only to remove themselves from the
world's cares and perceived vices. As separatists, the Shakers were a
unit of extreme religious enthusiasts. However, unlike contemporary
groups, they created a body of art and craft that will survive their
religious works. Today, one Shaker
Village remains at Sabbath day Lake, Maine.
The Shakers' commitment to a life of purity, simplicity, and utility is no
more clearly evident than in their simplified original style of
Furniture. Its clear crisp lines and singular lightness (with no
sacrifice in strength ) fit equally well into modern interiors or more
traditional settings.
