The land on which the present convent and church now stand was bought by the Reverend from Lewis Kelly Esq. for the sum of £100. On the 1st February 1838 the Reverend laid the foundation stone of the new convent in the presence of nuns, poor children and many lay people. On 22nd August 1939, the solemn blessing of the new convent took place and the religious went to preside in it.
The School
In 1886 Fr. John Nolan laid the foundation stone of the Primary school.
The nuns in the area began to teach in the school. Parents paid a small
fee to provide a hot drink of cocoa and bread to the more needy children
of the school. The drink was served in a long hall, which is still referred
to as the "cocoa hall" today.
In 1902 an extension consisting of an infant school, Kindergarten, cookery and laundry department were built to cater for increased numbers attending the school. Practical training was given in domestic economy, cooking, laundry, dressmaking, house-crafts and first aid. Pupils were also prepared for different grades of the Royal Irish Academy of Music. Physical Education consisted of lessons in The School Drill, and a display took place annually on 29th June every year.
In 1936 a further extension was built, and this became the secondary school. In 1969 the old primary school building was vacated and these rooms were also used by the secondary school.
In May 1993 a number of additional rooms were added, including an art room, kitchen, staffroom, and extra classrooms. This extension was officially opened by Sr. Philomena Cavanagh, who was the principal of the school when it opened in 1936. In 1997 a fully equipped computer room was opened.
At present there are thirteen classrooms, and other specialised rooms
such as a science laboratory, art room, home economics kitchen, computer
room, library, Prayer room and a PE hall with changing facilities.
