The E.R.H.A Exchange programs commenced in May 1989. It's main
objective is HIV and Hepatitis prevention. The Outreach Worker
provides a non-judgemental, user-friendly service. As part of
this service we also provide harm minimisation information on
the following: |
|
- HIV and Hepatitis Prevention
- Safer injecting techniques
- Safer Sex information (condoms available)
- Primary health care
- Information on polydrug use including overdose risks
- Early referral
Needle Exchange is available for people over 18 years of age
who present with track marks (i.e. evidence of previous injecting).
The amount of needles given is dependent on the amount of returns
and the amount of drug used. We can also give needle exchange
to people under the age of 18, if they have a consent form from
their parents or we can help them in obtaining it (i.e. meet
with their parents). We can also phone our senior psychiatrist,
if there is an emergency case that we feel may be at risk.
Plus we have fast track treatment programs for young people.
This leads us into the work we would do in treatment centres
and the follow-up on clients that attend the centres, house
calls, prisons, which in turn, keeps us in contact with the
other part of our team such as doctors, nurses and counsellors.
