Maynooth Housing Action Hosts Their Official Public Launch

On Tuesday 13th November, 7pm - 9pm, in the CALLAN BUILDING 1 (MAYNOOTH UNIVERSITY CAMPUS), Maynooth Housing Action (MHA) will host it’s official public launch. After becoming publicly active on the 22nd of September, as part of Take Back the City’s national day of action, with a banner drop and leafleting in the Maynooth town square that was well received by the community, MHA has gone from strength to strength.

We protested the sale of Buckley House and Lands, a move that would have a negative effect on the local community, locals, students, and businesses. We received further support for this action from passersby and local businesses, resulting in a list of sign ups who began attending our weekly open meetings.

Over the past month, MHA has been supporting tenants at 45 College Green in their dealings with a landlord that has flouted their obligations and charges excessive rent, exploiting both first year students and young working people. This issue has seen a further generation of public support, and increased engagement with the local community, alongside receiving wide reaching exposure online.

Now, in an effort to continue the momentum of our work and build stronger connections in the area, we are hosting an official public launch. The launch will feature speakers from the political parties that have done significant work in addressing the worst housing crisis the Irish state has ever seen. Solidarity-People Before Profit TD’s Paul Murphy and Richard Boyd Barrett will be speaking, following the passing of the motion to declare a housing emergency on October 3rd (prompting the massive, midweek turnout of 10,000 people for the Raise the Roof demo). The launch include speakers from MHA and the Take Back The City group, and we are confident that some of our local representatives from the Kildare county council will join us on the day.

Maynooth Housing Action is seeking to get more of the community involved in the housing movement, and hopes this event will provide a platform for people in the community to share the housing issues they are having, and come to conclusions on how these may be addressed together and cooperatively.

We extend an invitation to any and all that are affected by the housing crisis and hope that a good turnout on the 13th of November will build community solidarity and point the way towards community-based solutions to the housing crisis that are achievable in the here and now, along with more long-term sustainable solutions to secure the right to a home of every person on this island.
