Rallycross set for best season for many years

Championship kicks off at Mondello Park this Sunday, February 1st.

The 2015 Motorsport Ireland National Rallycross Championship kicks off what should be its best season for many years at Mondello Park this Sunday, February 1st.

The championship organisers have renewed optimism about the sport in 2015 as the series has attracted a sponsor for the first time in many years, expands to a new circuit and welcomes the British Rallycross Championship back to Mondello Park.

The newly named McLoughlin's Industrial Flooring Irish Rallycross Championship gets underway with two rounds at Mondello Park, one in February and one in March followed by its first trip to Tynagh in County Galway for round three. The British Rallycross returns for two days of racing in June before its back to Tynagh in August. The calendar then finishes with two more Mondello Park visits in October and November.

This weekends first round has attracted Welsh driver Mark Watson with his Citroen Xsara Supercar and this will be the first visit by the British series regular for a number of years. Entries for the event are still coming in but are already seeing an increase over 2014 levels, which hopefully signals the beginning of a return to form for the Irish Rallycross Championship.

Sunday's event will follow the usual format with three heats for the Supercar, Modified, Stockhatch, Civic Rallycross, Junior and Rallycar divisions followed by the Finals.

Admission to Sunday's races is just €12.50 for adults with under 16's admitted free of charge.
