Irish Drift Championship to headline Mondello Modified Live

All over the country, Ireland's top Drifters are making final preparations...

The opening round of the 2014 Irish Drifting Championship will be the centre piece of the first big Modified Car show of the year, 'Modified Live' at Mondello Park.

Modified Live takes place this Sunday April 27th, with Polish Drift sensation Pawel Trela and the Irish Drift Championship (IDC) as its main attractions. Drift All Stars competitor Trela, will make his first Mondello Park and IDC appearance with his spectacular Opel GT, marking the first time one of the German sports cars has appeared in an Irish Drift Championship event.

The new IDC season looks like being the strongest ever according to Championship manger Dave Egan, “This is a new beginning for the series and a new era” says Egan. “With reigning champion James Deane representing the IDC in Europe this year, the way is open for a new name to be etched onto the trophy. With all of the top names returning, some with brand new machinery, I am expecting the closest title race in Irish Drifting history.”

Polish visitor Pawel Trela will be just one of a 105 car entry, littered with big drifting names. Top of that list will be fourteen year old Jack Shanahan, fresh from his win at the opening round of the British Drift Championship at Lydden Hill last weekend. Shanahan regularly competes alongside Trela in the European Drift All Stars series with his M3 Engined S14, as does Nigel Colfer who will also compete at Mondello with his 800HP 180 SX. Also on this weekend's entry list will by Lydden Hill runner-up Shane O'Sullivan with his Japspeed S15.

Despite having the lowest power figures in the Pro ranks Brian Egan will start as one of the favourites with his ultra light weigh Nankang AE86 Corolla and joining him in Nankang colours will be team WKD's Wes Keating. Others to look out for include regular IDC front runner Mike Fitz, with his rotary engined Mazda which produces a phenomenal 500hp from just 1300cc, and Fitz's team mate Adrian Walsh, along with Duane McKeever and John McCarthy who should all be in the mix when it comes to the final run-offs on Sunday Afternoon.

The Drifting event will take place over two days, with the Semi Pro competition and Pro qualifying taking place on Saturday. Sunday's main event will then be just part of a full day of attractions at the Modified Live show. The drifters will be joined on the track timetable by Round 2 of the Irish Time attack series, while off track a very full paddock will house the IDC and Time-Attack competitors, Ireland's best Modified Cars, the Autoglym Show and Shine competition and an extensive trade area.

Tickets for the event are currently on sale with an offer of free Grandstand seating, worth €5, with every ticket booked in advance. To find out more about the event and to book your tickets see www.mondellopark.ie/modified.
