About Data in the Townlands Database

There are 1,277 Townland records in this database – there is an excellent website for Townlands in 1851 for all of Ireland - www.seanruad.com - which lists 1,283 records for County Kildare; this newer database takes account of some changes to the Townland system, mostly by 1881; multiple entries for some of the Towns such as Athy and Celbridge have been merged into one entry.

Another excellent website is www.logainm.ie a database of Irish placenames which offers a translation or clues to the translation of most of the townland names in Co. Kildare as well as the other territorial and electoral divisions.The remit of the project being to establish official Irish placenames searchable under both Irish and English variations.
