IBAL Results - Leixlip's Consistent Improvement
IBAL – Irish business Against Litter - published the overall results of its November 2007 survey of 50 Irish towns (Dublin City is excluded) on 7th January, 2008. The survey was carried out on IBAL’s behalf by An Taisce. In the two years since Leixlip first entered (at the request of the LTTA), Leixlip has moved from being a ‘Litter Blackspot’ to being a ‘Serious Litter Problem’ to ‘Littered’, to ‘Moderately Littered’. This represents a consistent improvement over this time.
Countywide, there has been a step-change improvement since April 2007. County Kildare, taken as a whole, now lies in the middle of all the country’s 50 towns judged, having been in the dirtiest quarter previously. It is now a case of ‘much done, more to do’ to get it up even higher.
Regarding Leixlip we would like to commend our volunteers, our local Residents Associations and the local authorities, for Leixlip’s consistently improving marks. Especially, we would like to congratulate Scoil Úi Dhalaigh, for their excellent performance in last year’s IBAL results.
Leixlip Tidy Town Association shares with the Leixlip Area Committee of Kildare Co Council and Leixlip Town Council the desirability of separating the road cleansing services from the road construction ones, so that road cleansing lorries are used for road cleansing when they are needed, not when they are not required for road construction and maintenance. Some of the Kildare towns’ results, Athy and to a lesser extent Naas, suggest a lack of consistency in the cleansing, over the past two years.
The brush-and-pan used by the town’s sole cleansing operative urgently needs to be replaced with a vacuum-cleaner to greatly increase his productivity. While the numbers employed by Kildare Co Council have doubled in the past twenty years (from ~600 to ~1200), there has not been a doubling of the manpower devoted to roads’ cleansing in Leixlip.
We thank and congratulate all those who helped make Leixlip a cleaner and tidier place that it was six months previously.
