IBAL Results - Leixlip's Consistent Improvement

IBAL – Irish business Against Litter - published the overall results of its November 2007 survey of 50 Irish towns (Dublin City is excluded) on 7th January, 2008. The survey was carried out on IBAL’s behalf by An Taisce. In the two years since Leixlip first entered (at the request of the LTTA), Leixlip has moved from being a ‘Litter Blackspot’ to being a ‘Serious Litter Problem’ to ‘Littered’, to ‘Moderately Littered’. This represents a consistent improvement over this time.

Countywide, there has been a step-change improvement since April 2007. County Kildare, taken as a whole, now lies in the middle of all the country’s 50 towns judged, having been in the dirtiest quarter previously. It is now a case of ‘much done, more to do’ to get it up even higher.

Regarding Leixlip we would like to commend our volunteers, our local Residents Associations and the local authorities, for Leixlip’s consistently improving marks. Especially, we would like to congratulate Scoil Úi Dhalaigh, for their excellent performance in last year’s IBAL results.

Leixlip Tidy Town Association shares with the Leixlip Area Committee of Kildare Co Council and Leixlip Town Council the desirability of separating the road cleansing services from the road construction ones, so that road cleansing lorries are used for road cleansing when they are needed, not when they are not required for road construction and maintenance. Some of the Kildare towns’ results, Athy and to a lesser extent Naas, suggest a lack of consistency in the cleansing, over the past two years.

The brush-and-pan used by the town’s sole cleansing operative urgently needs to be replaced with a vacuum-cleaner to greatly increase his productivity. While the numbers employed by Kildare Co Council have doubled in the past twenty years (from ~600 to ~1200), there has not been a doubling of the manpower devoted to roads’ cleansing in Leixlip.

We thank and congratulate all those who helped make Leixlip a cleaner and tidier place that it was six months previously.

IBAL’s report for their November 2007 Survey of Litter in Leixlip:

Leixlip came 32nd out of 50 towns / cities surveyed.

This report should be read in conjunction with the previous IBAL litter survey of 2007.

Leixlip has improved considerably since IBAL litter survey earlier in 2007. The majority of sites surveyed had moderate levels of litter – with a little extra effort a couple of these could easily get the highest litter grade – e.g. Leixlip Louisa Bridge Railway Station (Inside) and Louisa Bridge Apartments. The Main Street was the most heavily littered site – a dirty, derelict building and metal gateway were mostly responsible for the overall classification and if these were tackled it would make a noticeable difference to the street.

Maynooth Approach Road: Moderately Littered. There have been some improvements along this busy approach route into Leixlip. However, this needs a more sustained effort as there was still a small amount of a wide variety of litter present.

Main Street: Serious Litter Problem. A dirty, derelict building, grubby litter bins and a dirty metal gateway (to beauty parlour) were the main reasons for this poor litter rating. Cigarette butts / chewing gum were also very obvious.

Scoil Chearrbhaill Uí Dhailaigh – Outside and Inside: Clean to European Norms. This was an excellent site. Both the inside and outside of the school grounds rated highly. It was very well maintained and is clearly respected by the users.

Leixlip Railway Station – Inside: Moderately Littered. (at Louisa Bridge). The casualness of a few took away from an otherwise very good site. With just a little extra effort this could easily get the highest litter ranking. Graffiti was very obvious at the station.

Leixlip Railway Station – Outside: Clean to European Norms. (at Louise Bridge). There was a litter picker at work at time of litter survey – the area was spotless and in very good condition.

Louisa Bridge Apartments: Moderately Littered. This site just missed getting the highest litter ranking – with a quick clean up this is easily attainable. It was a new development and was in very good condition.

Rockingham: Moderately Littered. As with the previous residential area there was a very small presence of litter – some fast-food wrappers and plastic bottles. With a little extra effort this could easily get the top litter grade.

Salmon Leap Bridge: Moderately Littered. There was a wide variety of litter at this site – much of it food related. It would seem that much of the litter is thrown over the wall into the weir – there were no litter bins in the area surveyed.

Old Dublin Approach Road: Moderately Littered. A more thorough approach to cleaning along this route would make all the difference. Fast-food wrappers and plastic bottles prevented this site from getting the highest litter classification.
