Intel Volunteers at work on roundabout

Intel volunteers have helped clear the roundabout near their premises of weeds and ivy as part of an improvement project being undertaken by the LTTA. The first part of the project involved cutting back the excess of vegetation and removing it. Intel volunteers and their coordinator, Edel McKee, have been on the site on several occasions, along with Joe Scales, LTTA’s Deputy Chairperson, and other tidytowners. The roundabout is large and a great deal of work is involved.

LTTA obtained an amenity grant from Kildare Co. Council early in 2007 for work on two roundabouts, this one and another at the south end of Matt Gough Bridge Road (the West Leixlip/Celbridge Interchange). Work on both will continue over the winter, with the one at the Easton Road end being completed first. Our planting at the Easton roundabout is aimed at drawing attention to the three small horse jumps on the site, which we have already refurbished. We hope to have a monumental feature erected on each roundabout in due course; an idea is already in hand for the roundabout nearest Intel’s plant. We will try and arrange for each monument to reflect historical connections with their area.

The Association is delighted to have Intel volunteers’ help. Standing stones, like ogham stones, such as the one discovered in Donaghmore graveyard nearby, have been uncovered during the work.

We would like to have names put on each of the roundabouts, for example, the townland name, or Intel, which would help identify them to visiting travellers and for traffic management purposes. Any suggestions would be welcome; we will pass them on to the local authority.

We welcome help with our planting, litter-picking and other work from young and old alike.  Pictured here is Thomas, a secondary-school student, who is working with us for a fifteen-hour module as part of a transition-year project in his school. He has just re-planted this half-barrel on Captain's Hill, Leixlip, with Winter bedding plants thomas_newlove_02.jpg
