This report was commissioned by Leixlip Town
Council to identify how the built environment
of Leixlip town centre could be improved and its
visual amenity enhanced for residents and visitors
alike.
The survey was conducted between November 2001
and September 2002. It is a visual survey conducted
as a walk-through on all public accessible routes
and by aerial photography.
Since many of the suggestions in this report
would involve alterations to, and maintenance
of, both private dwellings and business properties,
the support and co-operation of the towns
business proprietors and residents is crucial
to its implementation.
The study aims to offer constructive advice to
property owners on how to improve the appearance
of individual buildings, while taking
into consideration the effect on the streetscape
and the town centre as a whole.
There are also a number of urban interventions
proposed which it is considered would enhance
the urban fabric and provide focal points within
the town centre. These proposals are aspirational
and are suggested to prompt debate and discussion.
Any proposal would, if advanced beyond an aspirational
level, require full public consultation and may
be subject to the relevant planning process.
The recommendations of the previous report, prepared
by Ann OLeary and Associates, were to be
carried out between 1996-2001. There have been
considerable improvements to the town centre since
the report was commissioned. We have included
photographs from the previous report to illustrate
some of the more significant changes. Notably,
the pavement to two-thirds of the entire Main
Street has been replaced and the road re-surfaced.
The Main Street lighting has also been replaced
with traditional decorative ground and wall mounted
light fixtures. The Confluence sculpture on Main
Street also provides an attractive focal point
within the town.
