Leixlip Town Improvements Study 2003

4.0 Study Area

4.1 Area 1

Approach from N4 interchange-to Main Street from the roundabout at the intersection of the main Dublin-Galway Road

P The formerTara Co.Op site is prominently located at the N4 interchange. The derelict and unsightly buildings detract from the image of the main entrance to Leixlip village. The owner of the site should be encouraged to co-operate with South Dublin County
Council to improve the presentation of the town.

P The re-development of the Springfield Hotel has a considerable positive visual impact on the entrance to the town. The elevation on the Dublin side, however, requires further consideration in order to lessen the impact of the air handling and ducting units.

K Note: The location of the footpath from the
roundabout to Leixlip Village is inconsistent as it alters from left to right as it enters the town. South Dublin County Council should be encouraged to consider re-aligning road and footpath and redesigning or re-surfacing.
There is a need for a footpath from the
Springfield Hotel to Liffey Bridge on the south side as there is considerable pedestrian movement. created by the Springfield Hotel and Becketts on Cooldrinagh Lane.

P The stone wall from the opposite the Springfield Hotel has collapsed at a number of locations and should be repaired with stonework to match the existing wall. The wall should also be examined for structural stability to ensure public safety.

K The milestone antiquity and the stone wall behind it are both in a state of disrepair and should be repointed and re-erected.

P The trees behind the milestone require
examination and maintainence.

K Fingal County Council should be approached and asked to consider removing the large sign that indicates the presence of the waterworks.

P The Salmon Leap Public House is very well
maintained and has a very attractive floral display. This provides a good focal point when leaving the town in the Dublin direction as it is on a direct axis with Liffey Bridge. The location of the oil tanks and the flood lighting to the public road require attention.

K The entrance to the ESB works and hydroelectric dam needs detailed consideration with regard to the surface treatment and to provide a greater sense of
enclosure at these entrances. This is an important nodal point as it is on a direct axis with the entrance to the town from the Dublin direction and is therefore in direct view. The hydro-electric dam constructed in the 1960’s is one of only seven hydro-electric schemes in Ireland and may have some tourist potential. The possibilty should be explored of providing an interpretive centre provided
within the town to attract visitors.

P The Toll House , constructed circa,1734, is in very good repair and is well maintained. The timber facia board at the front entrance at street level should be completed. The Liffey Bridge(Salmon Leap Bridge) is a five
span masonry arch bridge with the main three arches spanning the river and remaining two arches spanning the disused millraces.

K The Liffey Bridge into Leixlip is in a poor state of repair. Kildare County Council has detailed plans for its upgrading and this project is at an advanced stage. The cantilevered footpath to the west end was added circa 1890. Kildare County Council have detailed plans to repair and refurbish the structure.

K Provision of pedestrian access to a riverside walk should be considered on the Leixlip side of the bridge, which could extend from this point to the Rye river bridge. (Note: The E.S.B. shop is on a direct axis with the bridge and occupies a very prominent location. This would be a good location for a building of civic importance.)

P The Toll House, constructed circa,1734, is in very good repair and is well maintained. The timber facia board at the front entrance at street level should be completed.

K The footpath needs substantial repair work from the bridge to Main Street. The pavement and surface treatment also requires upgrading, extending past Shingled House back up the junction with Captain’s Hill.

P The owner of the residence adjacent to the
Garda Station. should be encourage to replace the concrete block wall with stonework. John’s Barber and the Garda Station are both contained within a three-bayed building.

P The owner of John’s Barber should be encouraged to remove the roller shutter and to replace them with any necessary security measure behind the facade.

K The Garda Station because of it’s restricted
opening hours does not create much pedestrian activity and as such does not add to a vibrant commercial town centre. Also because of the restricted opening hours the
security shutters are in their closed position during the day.

P The E.B.S. building has been extensively renovated recently. The building is in very good condition with traditional shopfront and security measures behind the glass.
