Naas residents protest over trucks traffic

The anti-truck march in Naas on Saturday

NAAS, 12 November: by Brian Byrne. A substantial number of people, many of them parents with children, turned out on Saturday for a protest march against truck traffic through Naas. The protest was organised by two local councillors in the wake of the most recent death involving a truck at the Murtagh's Corner area.

And the organisers promised that they would block the Naas Bypass if they don't get immediate action from Kildare County Council in the form of restricting trucks carrying waste through the town to facilities at Silliot Hill near Kilcullen.

Organiser Cllr Mary Glennon said other countries used redistribution centres so that any materials to be carried through major residential areas was transported on smaller vehicles than the HGVs which pass through Naas every day.

She also said there were alternative routes which could be followed which would not involve HGV traffic through towns like Naas, and they should be upgraded immediately and the trucks should be forced to use them.

The organisers, including Cllr Pat McCarthy, will present a petition to Kildare's county manager, Niall Bradley, this Monday morning, demanding immediate action.

Cllr McCarthy will also ask Naas town clerk Declan Kirrane what progress has been made on a motion passed by Naas UDC more than a year ago which instructed the authority to enter discussions with Kildare County Council and the Garda Siochana on providing the necessary bye laws to restrict the size and routes of trucks and their traffic through Naas.
