Council agrees to do major survey around lakes

NAAS, 2 October: by Trish Whelan. A survey on traffic routes, parking, lighting, pathways and amenities in the areas of Fairgreen (above), the lakes area, and Naas Hospital, is to be undertaken by both Naas UDC and Kildare County Council.

It would include discussions with local interest groups, including Residents Associations in the area.

The idea was put forward by Cllr Seamie Moore (right) who said car parking is needed to deal with the huge numbers of people visiting the lakes on the Ballymore Road.

He said: “We should judge what we need for the lakes area, what we could take from the Craddockstown Road and the requirements for the swimming pool, instead of doing it all in a piecemeal way.”

He wanted to see pathways in the lakes area to allow people to walk to the hospital without having to compete with cars on the road.

Lakeside resident Cllr Pat O’Reilly said he would welcome a car park along the Ballymore Road for those visiting the lakes.

His neighbour Cllr Charlie Byrne vehemently objected to such a car park along the road. And he told officials ‘not to put a development on the table regarding the lakes because he would defend it in the courts’.

He had previously put down a notice of motion seeking a wildlife area, with trees, at the top end of the lakes area (above).

“Seamie Moore said he would like to see old people’s houses up there,” he said. "The town clerk says there is a report on the development of the lakes. I want the councillors to be involved in that."
