Mayor Timmy in surprise second defection

16 June: In a surprise move, the Mayor of Naas, Cllr Timmy Conway, has left the Progressive Democrats to join Fine Gael, just days before he stands down as Mayor.

Cllr Conway was a founding member of the Progressive Democrats. Before that he was a Labour Party Senator.

This week, he said the reason behind the move was because he was deeply unhappy with the present government.

His decision came as a surprise to Cllr Pat O’Reilly, the only Fine Gael councillor elected to Naas Town Council.

“I couldn’t believe it when I heard it on Thursday,” he told KNN, “and I didn’t realise it would come public knowledge so soon. Hopefully we will work together for the good of the town and I look forward to the experience.”

Timmy Conway has been an often controversial member of Naas Town Council and was instrumental in getting Naas to twin with Omaha in Nebraska. He had persuaded Omaha Town Council to vote to take on Naas before it was even made known publically in the Town Hall in Naas.

Weeks later he heading back to Omaha to lead the St Patrick’s Day Parade there. Cllr Willie Callaghan performed that particular honour last year.
