Stagg slams inaction on Mill Lane flooding

LEIXLIP, 27 September: by Bill Trapman. Kildare North TD Emmet Stagg has expressed amazement that no action has been taken to remove the causes of the severe flooding that has occurred regularly in Mill Lane, Leixlip.

Following a visit to the Mill Lane last Saturday, Deputy Stagg said that he saw an area where the stream had been reduced to less than half its size by a local developer and a steel grill placed across the stream that would cause a blockage in heavy rainfall. Bushes and briars were growing along and in the stream that would further restrict the flow of water, he said.

"Even as a lay man I was able to see there is an obvious solution to the flooding problem at Mill Lane,” he said. “It should be piped directly to the River Liffey from the back of the fire station, with pipes large enough to take the size of flow that occurred during the last flood.

“I have now contacted the County Engineer and requested that obvious remedial action be taken now and that the Consultants that were appointed to examine the flooding in Ardclough, Straffan and Maynooth have their remit extended to also cover the Mill Lane floodings. I cannot understand why this was not done in the first place."
