Shackleton School for holiday weekend

17 October 2003: The 3rd Shackleton Autumn School kicks off on Thursday night next week with a reading of creative writing produced by local groups, at the Athy Heritage Centre.

The event continues through the bank holidaday weekend, after the official opening at 7pm on Friday 24 October with a talk by artist Vincent Sheridan on his exhibition of paintings, Arctic Enigma, which will be on display throughout proceedings in the Heritage Centre.

Other highlights of the weekend will include lectures, drama, creative writing and exhibitions. Speakers and guests include RTE’s Myles Dungan, Michael Smith, and Antarctic writer, Sara Wheeler.

John McKenna’s new play on the life of Quaker Mary Leadbetter, a member of the Shackleton family, will have its premier during the event. The Woman At The Window will be performed in the Library at 9pm on the Saturday.

On the Sunday at midday, participants can enjoy Fairbank Productions play on words Endurance, a one man show based on the life of Tom Crean, also in the Library.

On the Monday, field trips will include a tour of ‘Shackleton Country’ and a barge trip of Athy’s waterways.
